Obituary
Angela Beatrice (Helms) Smith, 84, of Huntland, Tennessee, passed away in Gadsden, Alabama on March 3, 2024. She was born in Gadsden, Alabama in 1939 to Joseph Ernest Helms and Bertie Beatrice (Thomas) Helms. Angie graduated from Gadsden High School in 1958, where she was a member of the girl’s basketball team, and attended Jacksonville State University where she studied business. Angie had an indomitable spirit and never let any of life’s challenges hold her back. She held many jobs over the years, including working for accountants and lawyers and the Federal Land Bank before obtaining her realtor’s and broker’s licenses. She then had a successful career as a realtor for 28 years.
Angie loved her family deeply – parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, children and grandchildren. She not only raised her two children, Les and Cary, but served as a second mother to many of their friends as they grew up. She was a devoted Nana who enjoyed spending one on one time with her three grandsons and one granddaughter. Angie was a gifted conversationalist who was capable of engaging everyone she met in an interesting exchange. She was a member of the international social sorority Beta Sigma Phi (Beta Theta Ritual of Jewel chapter), a great bowler and an ace rook player. She was always willing to help others: picking up groceries for someone housebound, taking friends to medical appointments, and making deliveries for Meals on Wheels.
She will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brothers Floyd Helms and Joe Helms, her sister Delores (Helms) Reid, her niece Kelly (Helms) Flemming, her nephew Kyle Reid, and her former husband, Larry Smith. She is survived by her son Les (Kathy), her daughter Cary, her grandchildren Bryan Boyd (Sydney) and Bryan, Blake, and Britney Smith, and her many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 14th from 11:00 AM until the hour of service, The service will begin at 1:00 PM at Crestwood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated.
