Anthony Joseph Hanley (July 11, 1965 – January 12, 2023)
First Sergeant Anthony Joseph Hanley was born on July 11, 1965 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dorothy
Louise (Bear) and Martin Francis Hanley. He died on January 12, 2023 at his home in Greenwood,
Indiana.
He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Grade School and graduated from Morristown High
School in 1983. He enlisted in the Indiana National Guard on November 21, 1986. He attended basic
training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and graduated in August of 1987. He lived in Muncie, Indiana, then
moved to Franklin, Indiana. He worked for 84 Lumber, then Davidson’s Lumber, then in 2009 returned
to 84 Lumber where he continued to work as a Contract Sales Manager (CSM) coordinator until his
death.
Anthony was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In 2001, he married Christina Karol Alden.
He had four children: Kara Marie was born in 1989; Krystin Suzanne was born in 1992; Tyler Nikolaus
was born in 1994; and Glen Ethan was born in 1995.
Anthony was honorably discharged from the Indiana National Guard as a disabled veteran due to an
injury suffered during a training exercise. In 2013, he reenlisted as a member of the Indiana National
Guard Reserve (INGR), a volunteer-only force comprised of Hoosiers committed to giving back to their
community while experiencing military commitment and camaraderie. In the INGR, he served with
training command, assisting with personnel training in all aspects of military service. He most recently
helped provide services to Afghan refugees at Camp Atterbury.
Anthony lived his life by the Core Army Values: L-D-R-S-H-I-P: Loyalty: Bear true faith and allegiance to
the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit, and other soldiers. Duty: Fulfill your obligations. Respect:
Treat people as they should be treated. Selfless Service: Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and
your subordinates before your own. Honor: Live up to all the Army values. Integrity: Do what’s right,
legally and morally. Personal Courage: Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Christina (Alden); his children Kara (Christopher) Boyles, Krystin
Hanley, Tyler (Tiffany) Hanley, and Ethan (Bree) Hanley; his seven grandchildren Rylen Grace, Benjamin
Michael, P.J., Bentley Ryan, Lucas Alexander, Gracelynn Rae, and Charlotte Elizabeth Louise; his siblings
Kevin, Dennis, Nora, Margaret, Terence, Timothy, Ann, and Bridget; as well as 19 nieces and nephews
and 25 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy, his father,
Martin, and his sister, Mary.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. He
was a craftsman who loved building things, including a large playground and pirate ship for his
grandchildren, a massive Christmas village with over 200 houses and 1,000 figurines, and special pieces
of refurbished furniture. He loved to read, play games, throw parties, cook, and dress up for Halloween.
He was an organ and tissue donor.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Impact Christian Church, 2800 N. Graham Road,
Franklin, Indiana 46131 beginning at 3:00 p.m. for family members, and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the
public, with a Memorial Service with military honors from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that any donations be made to the Indy Metropolitan Military Honor Guard (IMMHG) via check
or PayPal, designated for the INGR in honor of Anthony Hanley.
