Obituary
Carlton Laverne Knowlton, age 85, of State
College, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2024. He was born January 30,1939
in Mercer, PA. He was the son of the late Russell and Helen Whitman Knowlton.
He is survived by his beloved wife Karen Shepherd of 58 years.
In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by his
daughter, Kelly Knowlton Russell and her husband Kevin of Timonium, MD and his
son, Carl Eric Knowlton of Downingtown, PA; his grandchildren, Brandon, Lauren,
and Ryan Russell and Nora Knowlton; siblings Marlene Eshbaugh, Keith Knowlton,
and Carol Paxton. Three siblings, David Knowlton, Lowell Knowlton, and Delores Stone
preceded him in death.
He graduated from Mercer High School in 1957. During
high school, he was the high school basketball manager and a lifeguard. Then, he
attended Penn State and became a manager at the Penn State Center for Academic
Computing. He was in the Army Reserves. After retiring from Penn State, he was
a freelance photographer.
Carl enjoyed gardening, selling extra pumpkins to
stores, tending to 150 tomato plants, and growing rows upon rows of
strawberries to make jam. He was a volunteer at the Mount Nittany Medical
Center for 40 years. He was an avid Penn State football fan who had never
missed a home football game in more than 60 years. He enjoyed traveling with
his wife to the Rose Bowl, Disney World, California, Alaska, Hawaii, and
France. Each summer, he loved vacationing at the beach with his children and
grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend his
memorial service from 2:00PM - 3:00PM on May 18, 2024, at the Haky/Georgiana
Centre County Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA 16801.
