Obituary
Darrell R Hopkins, a long-time resident of Smith River passed away June 5, 2022. Darrell is survived by his daughter, Debra Hopkins-McCreery (Dave), sons, Larry (Carol) Hopkins and Richard (Donna) Hopkins, sisters. Donna (Dave) Hinton and Sharilyn (Jeff) Knox. Darrell was preceded in death by his wife Barbara of 54 years.
Darrell was born on May 2, 1936, in Lebanon, Oregon to Walter and Dorothy Hopkins. He grew up in the Lebanon area. When Darrell finished his term in the U. S. Army, they moved to the Smith River area and Darrell spent his career repairing heavy equipment, logging and building logging roads. Later he started Smith River Equipment and Repair which he operated until his son Richard took on the business in 2000. Darrell spent many years mentoring and sharing his knowledge with his sons, grandchildren and many others who knew and loved him as “Grandpa.”
Darrell had a great love for his dogs, horses and everything rodeo. He was a true “Cowboy”; he never gave up no matter the obstacles, no matter the circumstances, or weather, or hard luck, or fear, all cowboys possess one unique quality commonly called “try.” Darrell had TRY.
He will be missed by his grandchildren Shalom (Bill) Davidson, Tracy (Angelina) Turk, Ryan (Lilly) Turk, Renee Steven) Webster, Patricia Hopkins-Mattson, and all who knew him as Grandpa.
