Obituary

Eleanor (Ellie) R. (Smorada) Kania passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
Eleanor was born on February 26, 1930, in Oliver, PA to the late Louis and Anna (Bilpuch) Smorada.
She was married to William B. Kania of Uniontown.  They were a devoted couple for over 74 years.  Eleanor and William traveled extensively after retirement and cared deeply about their family.
She was preceded in death by seven siblings:  Paul Smorada, Margaret Turosek, Mary L. Froehlich, Dorothy Kelly, Katherine Molchan, John Smorada, and Anna Kluska.
Eleanor is also survived by her five children, William E. Kania and wife Lisa of Westborough, MA, James W. Kania and his partner Nina Mary Langsdale of Dormont, PA, Richard J. Kania and his wife Deborah of Hopwood, PA, Paul L. Kania and his wife Catherine of Smock, PA, and Michele Mitchell and husband Kirk of Gibsonia, PA.
She had nine grandchildren, Alex Kania and his wife Charlotte, Gregory Kania, Nathan Kania, Michael Kania and his wife Mary Anne, Joseph Kania, Paul Kania, Jr., Ann Kania, Elizabeth Mitchell, Kirk Daniel Mitchell.  She was active in the lives of her greatly loved five great-grandchildren, Eevie, William, Henry, Matthew and Andrew.
Eleanor was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and of the Christian Mothers.
She was also an active member and a Master Gardener of the Hopwood Garden Club and a long time volunteer with the Uniontown Hospital Auxiliary.
Eleanor was dearly loved by her family and will be deeply missed.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 180 Old Walnut Hill Road, Uniontown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church or to the Kania Scholarship Funds at Penn State or Penn West California.
