He served in the army during the end of WW2. After returning home, he worked for Eber Refrigeration. Howard had a passion for all things mechanical and chose being a technical engineer as a career. He, his father William and his Uncle Carl spent countless hours working on race cars both in Muncie and Indianapolis.
In 1950, he met Vera Mae Matson and they married in January of 1951. They shared 59 loving years together when Vera passed at their Ocala home in 2010. Howard and Vera had three children, Conni Anne (1952), Mia Lee (1956), and Bruce Leroy (1957).

Tiring of the cold and for health reasons, Vera and Howard moved to Panama City Beach, Florida and then to Ocala, Florida. In 2010 after Vera’s passing, Howard moved to LaGrange, GA where he spent the next 13 years of his life. During his time in LaGrange he made many friends and became affectionately known as Mr. Howard. His favorite time of the day was lunch.
