Hugh Allen Johnson

October 8th, 1937 - July 23rd, 2024

Obituary

Hugh Allen Johnson peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 23, 2024. He was born on October 8th, 1937 in Gadsden, AL and was a 1955 graduate of Gadsden High School. He graduated from Howard (Samford) College in 1961 and began his career as a pharmacist thereafter until his retirement. He owned and operated Hugh’s Pharmacy, Inc. with his wife Ann for 50+ years. Hugh truly loved and appreciated his coworkers and many customers.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, C.B. Johnson and Fannie Mary Johnson and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ann Hall Johnson, daughter Mary Garland (Johnson) Tucker, son Clay (Gwynn) Johnson of Knoxville, TN, and sister Cindy Stadler (Lewis). Hugh loved and was greatly loved by his six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to family, Hugh Allen is survived by very special friends Johnny Hamiter, Craig Jordan, and many others. The family would like to thank caregiver Karen Scott for her dedication and love to both Hugh and Ann.

Along with the love for his family, his passion was riding and showing his Tennessee Walking horses where he garnered many accolades and much success in the show ring.

We find comfort in knowing his legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

A private service was held at Union Hill Community Church on July 25, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Salvation Army or Union Hill Community Church.

He was buried with his boots on.

Memories & Tributes

Hugh taught me so many things as a young college student...I worked as a delivery boy in 1972, 73 & 74 during my school days! His humor & warm personality are what I remember most..loved you my friend! Paul Harbison
What a beautiful tribute to your father. He surely made a great impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. My sincere sympathy to your family, Erin Smith
Hugh, Ann, Clay and Mary Garland lived a few houses up the street from my family and we're such great people. Hugh and Ann always kept a watchful eye on the kids in the neighborhood and we always had the best conversations with them. They were just like a part of our family and Hugh will be missed terribly. Jennifer Cox Smith
I went to school with Mary and Clay for many years and loved to see them coming up by the Trade School in the way to Donahoo each day. I know that Hugh must have instilled much responsibility into Mary Garland to let them walk to school every day. I know Hugh was greatly loved by his children and now many grandchildren that they watched grow into responsible adults. I hope the Good Lord has given Hugh his Angel Wings and I know he’s walking on Gods golden streets. My condolences to Mary and Clay and their families as they share this huge loss. But Hugh touched many lives with his Pharmacy and I know his customers share in this loss. My prayers go out to Ann and the family. And I pray that God will keep everyone in his caring hands in the days ahead. 🙏✝️ Jody Lyles
