Obituary
Kathryn Lee Nunemaker Doughty, known to her friends and loved ones as Katie, departed this world unexpectedly on June 26, 2023, at the age of 48. She bravely battled breast cancer, but ultimately passed away due to complications related to the disease. Katie's life was one filled with determination, love, and joy.
Katie's journey began on August 27, 1974, in Muncie, Indiana, where she was born to Larry and Connie Nunemaker. As a child, Katie had an incorrigible spirit that carried her into adult life. She lived by her heart, fearlessly embracing every opportunity that came her way. Her three children were the greatest joys of her life.
In 2013, Katie's battle with breast cancer began, and she faced the disease with unwavering strength. Despite the challenges she encountered, Katie never lost her indomitable spirit. She would often say, "I take a step back, regroup, and begin again." These words became her mantra as she faced the difficulties that came her way. In recent years, Katie's cancer had metastasized to her bone marrow, and yet, she continued to live life to the fullest while continuing her battle.
During the last three years of her life, Katie achieved many of her dreams. She became a proud homeowner, officiated her eldest son's marriage, and purchased a Jeep, which she affectionately named the TMNT Machine, in honor of her daughter's love for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Katie cherished these milestones and spent her final years doing what she loved most with the people she loved most. Even in the face of devastating illness, she found peace and happiness through her enduring faith. Katie’s life was truly well-lived, leaving behind a legacy of strength and perseverance.
Katie is survived by her three children, Nicholas Weisse (Caitlyn) of New Bern, North Carolina, Jonah Doughty, and Savannah Doughty, both of Muncie. She also leaves behind her siblings, Cynthia Dunn and Sarah Campbell (Randy), both of Muncie, Beth Alexander of Anderson, and Jonathan Nunemaker (Chris) of Eaton; aunts Dorothy Flowers (Jeff), Judy Mansker (Sam), and Janet Nunemaker (Carl, deceased), all of Muncie, along with several nieces and nephews, and a large extended family.
Katie was preceded in death by her grandparents Vernon “Jack” and Grace Nunemaker, Homer and Bessie Roberts, and parents, Larry and Connie Nunemaker, and several members of her extended family.
Katie graduated from Muncie Central High School, Class of 1992, and later attended Amber's Beauty School. She began her career as a cosmologist before transitioning to the banking industry, where she worked for several credit unions. In 2019, Katie concluded her career as an associate with Ball State Federal Credit Union (now Ball State Financial).
Katie had a passion for her infamous Jeep, the TMNT Machine. She actively engaged with Just Jeepin’ Delaware County, spending countless hours participating in car shows and community parades alongside her daughter Savannah. Her love for “the Jeep life” and the memories created with Savannah will forever be cherished.
A celebration of Katie's remarkable life will take place on Thursday, July 6, from 1-5 PM at the Church of God at Yorktown, 1800 S. Andrews Road in Yorktown, Indiana. Just Jeepin’ Delaware County will honor Katie's life with a Jeep Parade near the end of the celebration. The church will receive memorials and flowers from well-wishers beginning at 10 AM on Thursday, July 6.
Kathryn Lee Nunemaker Doughty will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her strength, resilience, and abiding spirit will forever inspire those whose lives she touched.
