The area around and including Lakewood was picturesque farmland with the Chickamauga Creek meandering softly through its midst. The area along the creek has been turned over to the city and designated as "Green Space" Although the city now surrounds the cemetery, it has preserved its quiet park-like atmosphere where families can visit and reflect.
Deer, turkey, beavers, ducks, geese, and birds of every description plus an occasional bovine can be seen on the grounds.
