Obituary

Leslie Alan Driscoll, affectionately known as Les, was born on May 24, 1935, in Portland, Oregon, to Hazel and Tom Driscoll. He was the cherished brother of Barbara (Steve) Smith, Evelyn (AI) Lynn, Lois (Ren) Kaino, Virginia (Eorky) Wilson, Beverly (Dallas) Johnson, and Ken Driscoll, all of whom have preceded him in death.

Les spent his childhood in Portland, where his parents worked tirelessly to support the war effort by building Liberty ships. When World War II came to a close, the family moved to Ocean Park, Washington. There, Les entered the 7th grade and eventually graduated from Ilwaco High School as the 1951-52 state champions, before attending the University of Washington. At the university, he showcased his athletic prowess, earning varsity letters in track, football, and gymnastics. As a proud member of the "Big W" Club and Phi Kappa Epsilon fraternity, he embodied the spirit of camaraderie and dedication.

An exceptionally talented athlete, Les received an invitation to try out for the Olympics and even began ROTC training for the Navy, but by that time, his passion for teaching and coaching had taken hold. He devoted his career to Seattle Public Schools, where he taught Physical Education and Health at West Seattle High School. As department head, he not only connected with his students but also coached football, track, and gymnastics, leading his teams to city and state championships. His remarkable contributions were recognized through numerous awards, including the esteemed title of "Coach of the Year." Throughout his career, he remained active in various professional organizations, dedicated to the growth and development of his students and athletes.

Upon retiring from teaching, Les and his family relocated to Ilwaco, Washington, in 1988. There, he embraced community service, serving as a member of the Ilwaco City Council and working alongside his family in their oyster business. His faith was an integral aspect of his life, as he actively participated in the Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church, serving as a church officer.

Les is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ann; his sons, Dan (Linda), Dennis (Chloe), and beloved granddaughter, alongside many family members and friends who will forever treasure his memory.

In celebrating the remarkable life of Leslie Alan Driscoll, we honor his enduring legacy as an educator, coach, husband, father, and community member— a life dedicated to inspiring and uplifting those around him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.

Memories & Tributes

Les was a joy to be near. He was generous of spirit. When he was feeling good, he was cracking jokes and singing songs. He sang beautiful duets with his beloved wife Ann. Their love was humbling to witness, they just celebrated their 66th Valentine's day together. Few can boast such an enduring life long love. I'm grateful for the time I got to spend with our sweet Les. I am envisioning him with Ava and a giant pile of blueberry pancakes with whip cream and all the fixings. We love you Les. Les touched the hearts of so many many people and he took life in stride and chose to live with a happy heart. He chopped his own wood, he was an incredibly kind hearted person, and an industrious hard working one.
What a blessing to know him. Sending love to all who appreciated this community Pillar. His kitty Sophie misses him tremendously.
