Mariela Zapata

August 30th, 1963 - January 22nd, 2024

Obituary

Mariela Zapata (Gomez) was born in Colombia on August 30, 1963 to Luis Francisco Gomez and Petrona Maria Martinez.  She was mainly raised by her grandmother Noehmy Gutierrez.  She migrated to the United States (Miami, FL) on March 4,1979 alongside her sister Martha Lucia Gomez.  Mariela, married William Zapata on May 1, 1986 and they had a beautiful daughter; Ximena Zapata, born on November 30, 1988.  Unfortunately her husband passed away on December 20, 1995 from an airplane fatality.  Mariela was an avid Christian woman who was very active at DCN church, she served different positions, predecessor and provided Sunday school for the kids at the church. She taught them how to pray and the importance of having God in their lives.  And to always have faith.
Mariela was employed at Miami Jewish Home for 20 years and then she left and started working for God’s Kids Daycare where she was the Lead teacher.   This is where she flourished because she had a gift for children.  She knew how to take care of them in her own special way, they basically became her own children.  She had a unique, love, attention, and bond for each child.  And they are missing her so much.  But her legacy will continue within those children.  The parents are also grateful for the attention she gave them.  Mariela had different nicknames that we will continue to cherish, like Gordis, Marielusky, Boo, Maestra, and Guerrera.

Mariela passed away peacefully in her sleep while in hospice care at the University of Miami Hospital.  The family is very grateful for the kind and professional care received from the staff at UM and the Vitas hospice team.  She is survived by her daughter Ximena, her mother Maria, sisters/brother Martha, Monica, Esther and Ivaniel, her nieces and nephews, Adriana, Michael, Larry, Leyla, Jaime, Gabriella and Magaly, Son-In-Law Julio Alejandro, cousins in Colombia and other parts of the states and her dog Snuggles.
