Dan & I had the privilege of meeting Ralph & Renate around 13 years ago (possibly longer). Both have been dear friends to us. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family at this time. May God comfort them during this time.

I have such fond memories of both Ralph and Renate. As a photographer, I was invited to visit their beautiful flower garden, and was also blessed with veggies from their bountiful vegetable garden. I will miss you Ralph...Godspeed my friend until we meet again.

I met Ralph while jogging around Crescent City. He was driving by, stopped and introduced himself. He simply wanted to encourage me. Friendly, caring, encouraging; Ralph was a good friend. I am so thankful to God for bringing Ralph and Renate into my life. Fond memories.

Our heartfelt condolences to the Hirt family. I met Ralph in 1977 at the Simpson Timber Company office in Klamath, California, and remained in close contact over the years. We visited with Ralph and Renate often, canning albacore tuna, picking blueberries and mushrooms, cutting firewood and spending wonderful evenings watching July 4th fireworks from Crescent Beach. Enjoyed his sense of humor, his frankness and clarity of thought. He was one of a kind with an engaging personality and welcoming demeanor. He was my friend and I will think of him often and he will be missed. I will carry him in my heart, not in my sorrow, for that would be his wish.

I first met him back in the early ’90s, likely around 1993 or 1994, when I ran the Redwood Wild River Run for the first time as a high schooler with some friends. Back then, I didn’t really think about who made races like that happen and all the work that went into them, but after multiple times participating I came to appreciate it a lot.
Over the years, running into him on the local trails became something I always looked forward to. Those chance encounters were always a highlight. They had that same feeling for me as running into a celebrity, even though I don’t believe he would’ve ever thought of himself that way. We’d have short meaningful conversations about running, the trails, training, or whatever else came up and then get back to putting down some miles.
Through events like the Redwood Wild River Run and the Crescent City 4th of July runs, he did a lot for this community. He created traditions, brought people together, and helped shape the local running and trails scene. A lot of people benefited from that, whether we realized it at the time or not.
Really grateful for those moments on the trail or races and for everything he gave to this community. He’ll be missed, and remembered every time we lace up and hit the trails.

We remember when Ralph flew out to Bay City, MI to sit with our mother in the nursing home before she went to be with the Lord several weeks later. Ralph was very caring and supportive to mom and to our family. It was a wonderful visit! Sisters Margie and Janice
