In Loving Memory of

Vera V. Hummel Carson

July 10th, 1930 - March 15th, 2024

Obituary

Vera V. Carson entered Heaven’s Gates on Friday, March 15, 2024, closely behind the love of her life, Roy J. Carson, who passed the preceding Friday, March 8th. Only a week apart because their love story was for the ages – true soulmates that could not endure being without each other. It was rare to see one without the other.

Vera Virginia Hummel was born on July 10, 1930, in Decatur Township, Clearfield County, PA to Ashley Abram Hummel and Ethel Mae (Mease) Hummel. She grew up on the Mease family farm working alongside her grandfather until the family relocated to State College in 1944.  Vera graduated from State College High School in 1948.  Post high school, she worked a brief time at Penn State University until she married Roy on September 22, 1950. They took-up housekeeping in State College until they built their home at Carson’s Corner and resided there until 2018 when they moved to Bellefonte and then most recently to Celebration Villa of Nittany Valley in State College.

Vera was predeceased by her husband, Roy, on March 8, 2024. Surviving is their children Robert M Carson (Deborah Ace); Port Matilda, PA and Robin Carson Brouse (Robert); Boalsburg, PA. Three grandchildren, Julie Carson Watson (Matt) of Zion, PA; Dustin Carson (Nicky) of Liberty Township, OH and Eric Brouse (Leanna) of Cortlandt Manor, NY.  In addition, Vera is survived by 5 great-grandchildren: Amber Watson Geise (Dustin) of Milesburg, PA, Nate Watson, Kylie Carson, Gavin Carson and Elliott Brouse. Along with special nieces and nephews.

In addition, Vera was predeceased by her sister, Isabel “Scottie” Carson (Fred) and brother, Walter T. Hummel as well as other special family members: Martha Mease Noe (Jack), Shelvia (Musser) Hummel, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vera spent much of her life as a homemaker – enjoying baking, sewing, crafting and cleaning ~ anyone that knew Vera can attest to the joy she derived by giving something a “good scrubbing.”   She eventually returned to work at Penn State University in the College of Earth & Mineral Sciences, retiring in 1991.  Retirement brought much joy to Vera as she spent time caring for family members and helping with her grandchildren as was needed. Vera and Roy did enjoy their mutual love of golf and traveled to many golf courses in their retirement years. Any time there was music, Roy and Vera could be found dancing along to whatever was playing – in particular, they loved to polka, jitterbug or twist. They were a joy to watch as they would dance the night away until the last chord was struck. We cannot help but believe that they are twilling around in dance in Heaven.

Vera was an avid reader – often reading a hardcopy book, a book on her Nook and a paperback she carried in her backpack for ‘waiting rooms’ - all simultaneously. Her other hobbies included crafts, crosswords, and word searches.

Vera was a member of BPOE Lodge #1173 of Philipsburg, Eastern Star 388 of State College, Women of the Moose, Bellefonte Chapter #151, Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 245 of State College.
